Answer: Surprisingly, only five U.S. presidents have sported a beard while in office. The first bearded president was Abraham Lincoln, who grew his iconic beard in response to a letter from an 11-year-old girl who encouraged him to grow it to help him get elected. The trend of beards in the White House, however, did not extend beyond the 19th century. Benjamin Harrison was the last president to sport a beard, and when he left office in 1893, an era came to an end.
