It's The Little Things That Make Life Such A Big Deal!
I think you are right on this point. The last time we did a dental
on Heidi, she almost didn't come out form under the anesthesia. The vet said she would never do another full dental on her. No vet is going to let a dog or cat have rotten teeth without some intervention. My last vet did what he called a simple dental which was done under sedation rather than full anesthesia. This works well for older dogs. Getting bloodwork done is also a must. When I worked for the first vet, we had an older dog who needed a dental, but the owner wanted full anesthesia without bloodwork. The vet tried to explain to her the necessity of the bloodwork with a dog the age he was, but she refused the bloodwork, and we had her sign a release. The dog did not survive the anesthetic. By the way, she was the wife of a doctor and had plenty of money, so that was not the problem. Her daughter was angry at the vet, but not after she was told it was her Mother's doing.
