I wish that more people would give older pets a chance. Dottie was 12, and for the past couple of years we've helped her out of their box in the mornings about 1/2 of the time.
Older chickens get stiff after a night of sleeping in one position, just like people, and sometimes she hesitated at the ramp. It was just as easy to pick her up and set her on the ground, and, once she warmed up, she was as good as new.
She did everything the other hens did, and often was in charge if the others squabbled.
She did lay eggs, though probably not as many as others, but don't they deserve retirement once they are past egg laying? It doesn't bother me if a hen doesn't lay anymore. I know that some people judge their birds that way, but I think that should have pet status for their entire lives.
