THe litter can also be used when in an icy spot to provide traction for your wheels.
The socks - knee high are necessary - can be placed on the windshield wipers to prevent icing. Use of front and back wipers - works really well.
To prevent mirrors from frosting up put plastic bags over them at night. Also works well to keep snow off if not garage.
Here is a de-icer formula - 1/2 gal hot h2o, 1 tsp blue dawn and 1 T rubbing alcohol. Put in spray bottle - do not pour on glass.
Use on headlights, tail lights etc.
I put an old thrift store blanket across front windshield and held in place with wipers.
Also used an old blanket that I shut hood on to keep engine warmer... remove before starting car.
