Me, too. We are constantly trying to watch out for critters, or put them outside, but sometimes they are just in a bad place where you don't see them, etc. :-(
We all try, and that's the important thing. Yes, it probably does balance out.
Bug barns can be many shapes. They are for capturing bugs to view them...then release them, or simply move them.
The one that I had as a kid was vertical. The smaller one here is horizontal with a door on one end and a rounded top. And, the one that Dh was looking for, is like a tiny aquarium in shape.
They can be as basic, or fancy, as you like. Some have small feeding ports, or lights, most don't.
The requirements for me are:
Easy to clean out.
Let me send you some links to different designs, to give you ideas:
This one is the basic design of one of mine, only there's no handle on mine.
This pop-up design is newer. Not super new, but newer.
This is the newer butterfly design. Kids observe caterpillars turn into them.
We never did/had those. Just the regular ones to watch/identify a bug for a few minutes to a day, then let them go. :-)
Love All Life, Thank You For Posting! :)
