Mamou has become almost 100% house cat, at night. He comes in around dinner time, and spends the night with us. He was to lie on us, but barring that, he has a cat bed that he likes. We make good snuggle mates, apparently! This is so strange for a formerly feral who has remained an outdoor cat for the 7 or so years that he's been with us.
He still has his issues, and always will, but he's loving the cushy life.
He's warming up to his 'kneading pad.' I didn't want to have blankets unraveled, or get a claw inadvertantly in a leg, etc. So, I thought about a changing cloth that I had decades ago.
I found the closest thing, and it's worked like a charm. We just scoot it under his front paws if he wants to knead happily.
Uhura also likes being in a lot at night, but she still wants out if disturbed, and usually goes out before light, even though I wish that she wouldn't.
The boys want to pick on her, but she still holds her own. She hisses and growls at them if they don't get out of her way, or try to eat the food when she wants it. Now, for the most part, they just make a wide berth around each other.
As for Tux, the least tame of all before we were evacuated, and also the one who didn't come up here, even when Mamou finally did, he's trying to be involved, but he's very timid.
We like to leave the doors open for them, weather permitting, mid-afternoon. I think that it gives them practice with knowing where the exits are, gives a little bribe because they can eat while in, and builds confidence because they can explore at their own rate, go in and out many timees a day, etc.
Well, one day, Tux sneaked in to eat from the kitchen bowl. He didn't seem unfamiliar with houses, but only explored if he thought that you weren't watching him.
Dh left the door open one day until dusk.
We couldn't find Tux. There's a lot of open space, but he will squish into a small space, then remain totally silent for a long, long time. But, even if you find him, all he does then is run to another place. He's not that bad during the day.
All night long he made noises, knocking into metal. We looked for him, he moved. It finally took a canned food bribe, plus another hour to find him, and longer to get him out. He ignores an open door at night.
He's slid in 2ce since, and been in most of the night. If he would just sleep, and not get upset part way through the night, and knock into things etc. I would be fine with it.
One encouraging note, is that he used the litter box for the first time tonight.
He's a very sweet little cat, and you can tell that he wants to belong, he's just too nervous. But, if he sees Mamou going somewhere, he's right after him. I guess that he had another cat in his previous life as a friend.
Everyone else is fine. For Christmas, we will probably remove the barrier between the chicken runs, and make it one run, rather than two. They have taken some time to finish the baby food that we had!
Ribbitstilskin, and his buddy Kermit (not very original, but he's quite green compared.) are doing especially well.
Painting days were interesting for the critters.
Tilde had a good time keeping the painters in line, lol! From a distance, of course. But, she felt that she was really accomplishing something, and the painters knew that she couldn't get to them, so all were happy.
When all of the doors were open, and there was a strenger painting each one, imagine my surprise when Uhura darted in one of them! You could tell that she was not a happy camper, because she was kind of slinking, which I've never seen her do before.
After eating a bit, she paced, watching the doors, then darted back out when a painter left some space.
Mamou, on the other hand, wasn't going to even go there with people that he didn't know. He left for the old house as soon as he heard the trucks arrive in the morning, and returned each day once he was sure that they weren't coming back; about 20 to 40 mins. after they'd gone. They never saw him.
Then, one day, I discovered that Uhura likes painters! (She doesn't go near anyone who's not one of us, normally.)
My first hint was on Friday. Dh was talking to the foreman, with the doors open to dry, and Uhura came in. She started doing figure 8's around his legs. That was strange.
Then, on their last day here, the painters were packing up their trucks, except for one. He was in here, finishing up the edge of the front door. Every exterior door was open wide.
Suddenly, Uhura came in the front door, where the guy was working. Which, in itself, was odd. But then, she started meowing loudly at the guy, like when she wants to be fed, only a bit louder!
The guy went from squatting, to standing up pretty fast, and he looked down at Uhura like she was a wild animal. Definitely not a 'cat person.' But, she went on and on, walking practically on his feet. The guy grabbed his stuff, and left for the truck.
I don't know what that was all about, but she chased him off! So, she likes painters? Or, doesn't like painters? It's a mystery!
Well, that's all of the critter news for now.
Love All Life, Thank You For Posting! :)
