Picture a dog sitting up on his/her haunches, like the old school beg position.
You can either teach them to keep both front paws up, or teach them to lean in and gently rest one on your leg, to make getting the item easier.
To do the latter, you need to make sure that their nails stay dremeled, (sp?) so that you don't get scratched, and they don't catch on material.
It may work out fine, with his size and taking items from him in a sitting position, but if you want to hedge your bets, you can teach him the beg position just because, and link it to getting things later, if desired.
The only other thing, on this subject, is possibly not to use any word like 'beg' or even 'sit up' when teaching the beg position.
Think about what word you'd like to use if he was bringing you something in 2 years from now. So, something like 'give' or just 'up'...unless you use that to get them to jump onto something. You get the idea, though.
