This dog came from the pound. I have their photo of him a couple of weeks ago, if anyone would like to see him...more will be taken later.
He's part GSD, and I don't know what. Something black and tan, perhaps, because of how one brother looked.
I'll have to get my papers, but he's 3 months old. I realized that I haven't raised a dog from a pup in a looong time, though I have many times.
He's too young for a rabies shot, his 2nd parvo vaccine, or even a license. All that will be in about 3 weeks.
No, no name yet...working on it!
His mother was brought to the pound when he was 6" long, says the kennel woman. They were sent somewhere to be raised until they got their first vaccines, then sent back to the pound. There were 7 or more.
The woman adopted his sister, and said that she's scary smart. She was housebroken in one day, and learned not to teethe on her in two. She loves water, and will sit in her water bowl.
This guy also looks to be smart. But, I have no toys for him! He wants/needs to chew. If Ds gets off work before my feed store closes, he said that he'll get me a Nyla, and something else, to start. All of my toys are packed away, argh!
They gave us a brand new, blue, leash and collar. As soon as he outgrows it, I'm going to donate it back to them, for the next dog. That will be soon, as there's not extra room in the collar.
Ds was between jobs, so stopped in at the pound, and said that the dog seemed nervous.
Well, 2 reasons for that.
A - He's on pain meds...her was just neutered 2 days ago. His last pill will be tomorrow morning.
B - When the woman brought him out to see Ds....it was the first time...EVER...that he'd been separated from his littermate.
He's never been outside, in a house, or away from the other pups. So, he's a little upset, and has whined a bit.
But, he's already learned to walk, basically, on a leash, to go out for constitutionals. At first he wanted nothing to do with leashes, or walking outside. Also, he has already connected the ding-dong sensor sound with vehicles coming up the hill/driveway.
I need to puppy proof my house, as he immediately went into my 'stuff.' That includes writing pens, Sharpie, pair of scissors, etc.
We are going to go out to the escape pod and get one of the non-stolen wire crates out for him. Any other kind will be too hot, and I do want him crate trained for many reasons.
When he got here, before he even came in the house, he got a bath. There was warm water, so the guys did that before Ds went back to work.
They had treated him topically with something at the pound, and most of those things make me wheeze, itch, etc. so we just gave him a bath (we haven't had 1 flea this year.), which he didn't seem to mind, so we might get him used to regular baths while it's hot, so that he'll be easy to care for as he gets larger.
So, our jobs are to get the crate set up, get him his own dishes, get him things to *chew on!*, and hopefully smooth things over between he and the cats. Mamou is making himself scarce, though I can see where he is, and Uhura hasn't seen him yet.
Well, that's our big news. I'm happy that we got him for several reasons. Not the least of which is because they've been there, and haven't been adopted. I've been trying to get other dogs - which I still believe would have suited us perfectly - when this litter is not being looked at, from what I can tell.
Any good thoughts for a comfortable transition as we puppyproof, he gets used to us, having a house, not having any other dogs around, gets housebroken, etc. would be appreciated. I want us all to be happy, and Dh not to hurt his back anymore than it's been hurting the past few days. Picking up a wiggly 20 lb. wouldn't help it any.
Okay, off to check my house. There's wires that need moving, etc. Not to mention items we've never had to think about since being here.
Love All Life, Thank You For Posting! :)
