First, an interesting thing happened tonight. I was going to cook, so introduced him to his crate...there are too many things that he shouldn't touch yet.
He basically had a conniption, which we ignored, and later we let him back out. This is backstory.
After that, he walked into the crate, which I had purposely left open, a couple of times. He didn't stay, but went in. I thought that was a pretty good sign after only one introduction...especially considering that he did have a bit of a fit.
Then, he was in the kitchen with Dh, and began a kind of growling/barking at something while looking at the of full-sized kitchen windows.
Mamou was out there. (They are fine in the house together.) Suddenly, he ran like a bat out of somewhere or other, screaming bloody murder. I thought that he'd been hurt somehow. I asked if he'd been stuck by a cactus (no, they are all up on stands.), got his toe stepped on...? No to the last, also.
Dh said no, nothing happened. Meanwhile, he ran in here in pretty much a blind terror, turned once he was in the living room, and ran straight into his crate. There he sat for a few minutes before coming out.
I'm glad to see that, despite his original fit, that he's already thinking of it as a place of safety. It seemed kind of fast, but I'm not complaining.
After trying to solve what scared him so badly, I asked Dh if, when he turned to see what was going on, he had his flashlight on. He did. Maybe the giant light reflecting at him....?
About an hour later, I heard Uhura, and asked if she'd just come in? No, she'd been in all along. (She's not accepting of the newcomer as Mamou has been.)
That got me thinking...what if he wasn't looking out the window? What if he was looking at something next to the window, like a cat under a table in front of the window....like Uhura?
And, what if he stuck his face too close to her, and she gave him a good scratch? That would explain the 'I've been hurt' reaction. He's never met a cat before, and doesn't know the pitfall yet...or does now. At least it makes some sense.
Ds got to our hardware store just before they closed. He found me 2 chicken flavored Nyla bones. One rubbery puppy one, and one hard one. So far, he's using the rubbery one, and hasn't damaged it. And a ball by Kong.
I found a soft toy here, an ice cream cone with a face that we've always liked. I figured that would cover a hard chew, and chewie chew, a soft toy...plus a ball for exercise.
When we gave him the soft ice cream toy, he dropped it after a couple of minutes, so I threw it, to see if that was something that he'd like. What he did was bring it back to me. He did that 3 x's before he tired of playing.
So, now I'm wondering how he will be at retrieval work. Not yet, though, we've got a lot to deal with first...like him seeing and smelling the world!
I had an idea tonight, and asked Dh if he'd like to take him along when he locked the chicken's doors. It seems to me that, perhaps going in each night will help him to form a bond with the birds, plus it will give him a chance, each night, to look around and bark at wild animals close by, so that they will know that there's a dog watching them. Maybe they will not look at the chicken coop.
Oh, one last thing. My fruit trees have been heavy with fruit up here, and we were very excited to see the mature fruit on these trees.
But, this morning, every piece of fruit (20 apples on one little tree alone.), was gone, as was some of the trees' new growth.
The deer have never gone on the east side of the house where the trees are before. They usually are on the north and west on the hill behind the house, or the driveway. But, then again, there was a dog here before...
So, maybe a just-before-bedtime walk around is just what's needed.
Well, that's all from here. I'll try not to give daily reports.
Love All Life, Thank You For Posting! :)
