Aragorn is not needing as many "enforced" naps, which is where Mom says she's had enough puppy behavior and it's time to take a nap, so he goes in his crate. They are just like toddlers. They get too over stimulated, their routine too different, too tired, etc., and they get out of control. Aragorn begins nipping, full out biting, getting into bad mischief, versus puppy mischief, etc. This is when he gets an enforced nap. And almost always, I got it right. He just needed me to tell him he was tired and needed a nap. He comes out of his crate happy and bouncy and ready to go again.
For regular, been playing hard and need a nap, Aragorn usually just passes out wherever he is, as long as I am in the same room or he can see me as he falls asleep. He has access to his crate at all times, but it hasn't become his safe space yet. He also never really seeks out one of the dog beds. All the rooms he is allowed in, have hard floors (old wood flooring, vinyl sheet, ceramic tile or laminate). In true, blue merle sheltie fashion, he seems to prefer harder, cooler surfaces to sleep on. Even in his crate, he will push his crate mat to the back or front, sleep on the plastic pan and use the wadded up bed as a pillow for his head. Josiah and Shelby were the same way. PJ, Misty and now Arwen, prefer/ed to sleep on beds, blankets, crate mats, etc. It really is odd, how the one coat color is so different from the others.
As I just said, Arwen prefers to sleep on soft surfaces. She naps on one of the dog beds, in her crate (or in Aragorn's crate), or on my bed, if I haven't moved the doggy steps, and am in the bedroom. At night, she sleeps on my bed. Lately, during the 90+ degree weather we're having, she has been napping on the cooler floors and has discovered where by bedroom AC vent blows when it is on.
Both dogs sleep through the night. They both nap throughout the day. Neither has a time of day they sleep more.
