Krypto has learned to open the kitten's crate!!
Last night he was pulling on it with his mouth (it's a black, metal cage with a latch that has to be turned and pulled up.) and Dh said, this is loose. He fixed it.
Within' the hour, Krypto walked over to it again, and this time the door swung open! We told him no, and closed/latched it again. After one more time, we put a temporary clip on it, sheesh!
I'm sure that the first time, it was an accident, but once Krypto sees/hears/does something once, he tends to remember it. So, he tried to break his buddy out, but luckily the wardens were on the ball, lol!
The past 2 weeks have shown yet more maturing of Krypto, but, the more he matures, the more he reminds me that he's still a baby - no matter how he looks.
His bells have continued to be solid, and his new routine is to ring them, make sure that we heard them, then go to where his leash is and look up at it.
We're working on limited barking for everyday things, and bite inhibition.
With the barking, I don't mind a couple of barks at a delivery truck, for example, but am using these moments as training opportunities, to teach him to stop when told. He doesn't love it, but is not doing badly so far.
I have not stopped him from barking his 'big dog' bark at night, though, which rarely happens. It allows me to track what he's barking at. So far, the bear, for example.
The bite inhibition is going really well. Essentially, he always plays using his mouth right now. Teething, ugh. But, I'm using that as an opportunity to correct him by how much pressure he uses. As I told Dh...unless we tell him, how will he know how much is too much?
So I use the word 'teeth' drug out in a warning tone...teeeeeeth...whenever I feel he's using too much pressure with his mouth, even if it's not painful...yet! He always stops then, and licks my arm/hand. Today, he got on my chair with me, and mouthed my hand/arm (my arm fits into his mouth.) super gently, and never needed a warning/correction. I don't believe that he's not going to need one another day, but it's progress.
He's sitting reliably, and also waiting. Dh was telling him to stay, but we worked out that staying was for different circumstances than wait. We practice everytime that it's needed when he goes in or out of the door, when he gets food or water, and now with the kitten.
To help bond them further, when we feed the kitten his wet food, we let him lick the empty container. It's smaller than his tongue, so one or two swipes does it, but it's something new, and involves the kitten. He sits and waits while the kitten's cage door is opened, he's fed, and it's re-closed. Then, he gets his reward, after which he lies down a few feet away on his own for some reason.
We go back and forth between calling the new baby Henry, and Krypto's kitten. He likes to watch the kitten eat, play, drink, and yes, use the litter box. (He has an unfortunate interest in litter boxes, which is one reason that he's blocked from part of the house right now!) He will lie in front of the cat crate, which is next to his, with his nose about 1/2" from it, and we've seen them nose to nose before.
Mind you, the baby did stick his tiny paws out yesterday and batted Krypto's face. His claws are too small to hurt, but Krypto jumped back anyway. He's experienced adult cat claws, and knows to duck and weave!
I called my regular vet, and the one that we just took him to, and neither gives Proheart. They both offered me alternatives. One was Interceptor. Does anyone have any experience with it, or know anything about it?
How about modern kitten wormers/flea treatments? It's been a while. I remember what we used to use, but maybe there are better products out there now?
He's become a wigglewort when he's measured now. As best we can tell, he's close to 21" tall now, at the shoulder. Last week he didn't grow any taller than the week before, which was 20".
Krypto likes food a lot, but he's still motivated by praise the most. He'll do anything for a good reaction. So, we can be heard telling him that he's the smartest dog in the universe a lot, lol! He loves it!
Mamou and Uhura are fairly disgusted that yet another baby has come into the house, btw. They hiss at Henry.
But, for some reason, Uhura let Krypto stand with her at the front door last night. I've always wondered what he would do if a cat didn't rebuke him, and found out. He bathed her! And, she stood still for it! She still runs from him when she's in a mood, but this is a huge change! She doesn't have any cat friends, so doesn't get groomed by anyone but us...until now!
Well, that's all for this week and last week!
Love All Life, Thank You For Posting! :)
