I woke up really startled today. Mamou, didn't have a petting relationship with me until a month ago, when he wanted me to pet him, and it's not happened since.
Actually, I think that one of the things about me that he likes is that I respect his space. Remember, he is one of my formerly feral cats, and was abused as a kitten. I don't make any demands of him. If he lays with me he does. His choice.
I have a special phrase that I say when he comes over, and that lets him know that I am okay with him lying down, and he does. Remember, this time last year he was barely walking in the door.
Anyway, I was sound asleep this morning and woke up when something pushed on my diaphragm and chest. I opened my eyes really fast, and there was Mamou standing on me, his face a couple of inches from mine. Remember, too, that we didn't try to place him because he is sweet, but will slash without warning if something stresses him. So really, I wasn't thrilled with him there in one way.
But, he was very relaxed, and he licked my hand. I reached up to pet him, which we've barely ever done, and he started to purr. When I stopped petting he pushed his head back to my hand. I pet some more, he licked me again, and purred louder.
Dh picked him up, and put him back at my feet, and I went back to sleep....only to wake up to him back up on me, bumping me with his head.
What happened? He just woke up and said to himself, "I'm in the mood for being pet."?
So, that's progress, and I think that he's a fantastic cat, all issues aside, so that's kind of nice. However, he and I have to talk about this early-morning-standing-on-my-breathing-mechanism thing. He's a big cat, as I know that I've mentioned. The largest we've ever had!
