Sit down with a cup of tea because this might take a moment. When Alfred was a young pup, I was out in the yard doing some chores. One was adding an extension to my downspouts. I was using some black flexible accordion pleated plastic tubing to extend the downspout outflow. I had cut a length of it to perhaps three or four feet long and it was sitting on the lawn. Puppy Alfred went to one end and growled and, of course, the sound came out the other end. This surprised him and he jumped back. But his curiosity got the better of him and he came forward and this time he grabbed the tube and growled. This time I think he enjoyed the sound and he definitely enjoyed the fact that if he moved his head the flexible tubing whipped around a bit. This stuff is perhaps 6 in in diameter and maybe 3 ft long so made a super interesting flexible black snake. He whipped his head and the tubing flexed and it was all a big adventure. It became his favorite toy. In time, he learned how to play tug of war with other dogs using this tubing although the tubing did suffer. Eventually I bought a 50 ft roll of the tubing and would cut off three to 5 ft sections for play time as each section died and was tossed out.
Over time, as my supplied dwindled, I came up with an alternative. I salvage the sections of tubing as they got torn apart in tug of war games and I strung these sections on a length of cotton rope tied into a loop. If they grabbed the plastic, each dog could still have a piece with the rope acting as the connector. If they grab the rope that was all good too. We referred to this as the necklace of tubes but, to the dogs, we still just called it tube. Eventually I was completely out of the black plastic tubing. I decided to try some alternatives. I got some little rubber duckies and plastic baby toys from the Salvation Army and strung those on the rope but they didn't seem to generate the interest I thought they would. I experimented with a number of plastic bottles strung onto the rope and eventually came upon a few good candidates. The white plastic used for dove body wash and shampoo and also used by international delights coffee whitener or a nice soft plastic that seemed to be nice to the dog's teeth and yet durable enough. So now I collect these bottles and cut off the end so I can feed the rope through the mouth of the bottle and out the bottom to string them on. Alfred has two of these things in the yard right now.
We will be out in the yard doing chores or just the evening potty stroll and suddenly he will stop and look intensely in the direction of the necklace of tubes and I know the game is about to begin. He will rush towards it and grab one of the plastic bottles and kill it. Lots of growling lots of head shaking lots of intensity and lots of whacking himself in the head as the rope and the bottles whip around. He is clearly having a wonderful time but full of intensity. From time to time I will ask him to get off and I will grab the rope and fling it and he will rush to grab it. His growling is quite scary and I had to explain the game to a neighbor who was concerned that I had a vicious dog on the property. Now she and her kids watch with Glee as Alfred plays his game... Although it is not a game to him at all.
Okay, I know that was a really long story but maybe you got an idea for a weird toy out of it. And maybe you can come up with a better name than tube!
