Answer: The Doberman Pinscher was first bred by Karl Dobermann in Apolda, Germany during the late 1880s. Dobermann served in the dangerous role of local tax collector, and ran the Apolda dog pound. Having access to a variety of dog breeds, he sought to develop a breed that would be ideal for protecting him during his collections. He aimed to create a breed of dog that would exhibit impressive strength, loyalty, intelligence, and ferocity. After Dobermann's death in 1894, the Germans named the breed Dobermann-pinscher in his honor.
