Answer: Santa Claus has a team of nine reindeer pulling his sleigh on Christmas Eve. Their fabled names are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph, who leads them all with his bright, red nose. The names of Santa's first eight reindeer were revealed in Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from Saint Nicholas," which is perhaps more commonly known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Rudolph did not join the pack until 1939, when Robert L. May created him as a marketing ploy for Montgomery Ward.
