Answer: A group of resting sea otters is called a raft. Researchers have seen concentrations of over one thousand otters floating together while holding hands. To keep from drifting away from each other while they sleep, sea otters will wrap themselves up in seaweed, forming something that resembles a raft. The fur of the sea otter is the thickest in the world, with up to one million hairs per square inch. This fur insulates the body by trapping a layer of warm air between the outer surface and skin. The otter's dense fur also helps the otter stay buoyant in the water.
