The colossal squid has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom. Their enormous eyes measure approximately 28 centimeters in diameter — about the size of a soccer ball. Not only does the colossal squid have large eyes, but its pupils are also huge — approximately 3.5 inches wide. A large pupil enables the eye to collect every last photon of light in the murky waters where it lives. The squid is well equipped to detect its major predator, the sperm whale, as it navigates through the dark depths of the ocean.
