She definitely has issues, and I'm not at all sure that she was treated as well as she could have been at all times. During the time that she lived in her last home, 2 people were there for most of it. Mostly, I think that she suffered from a bit of neglect instead of being trained and doted on, but the people spent their nights becoming altered. I'm not convinced that they remembered their nights the next day.
And that, I think, is why Hira becomes more stressed at night. But, while not resolved, we've been making progress. We feed their last food of the day after dark so that there's a positive association with after-dark hours (we will back it up a bit later.), and work with them with treats before bed. The positive slant on after-dark hours seems to be working. Now, instead of cornering herself and looking scared at night, she plays with Krypto, and comes running for treats if we go near the drawer where we keep them.
Poor Krypto isn't learning anything, he's just being used as an example to Hira, since he's so good at basic commands. She watches what he does, and emulates him, most of the time.
She is learning one of my golden rules - you must take treats from hands gently. First, no one wants to feel like a shark was just hand fed. Secondly, I want to make her safe around Thyri. Thyri began asserting her position (w/ help from grandma!) nearly a year ago. While being held by Ds - so that she's up high, she tells him forcefully to sit or lie down, and when he complies, she gives him a treat.
Anyway, Hira is sitting at doors - to go out or come in, pretty quickly now, and doesn't always need to be told. She's also doing her business much more quickly.
There are 2 things that need to be resolved, but I think that only one will. The one that I think that we're stuck with, is her eating bees. I don't want her killing my honey bees. Yellow jackets and wasps, yes. Honey bees, no. Unfortunately, she's quick, and she hates them. And, she doesn't just kill them, she eats them...
The other is barking at Dh. She's only done it 3 times since she's been here, but still...! Last night he came in the door from the outside, and she barked at him at first. I think that he startled her, and she may not have known that it was him at first.
A few days ago, it was for petting Krypto. It's mostly when he pats her. He's a solid dog, and loves scratching and pats. I'm not sure that she wasn't jealous, though she's fine with just leaning in when she wants her share of petting, usually. Or, she was defending Krypto, thinking that he was being hit vs. being patted. Did someone hit her, or that big husky that was there? I don't know.
The dogs wrestle and play multiple times a day. Sometimes a table or some such is askew from their antics. It's doing wonders for both of them. Krypto has calmed a little, and needs to interact with us a little less to play. Before she got here, he was constantly pestering for us to play when he wasn't at rest, since he had no one else. Now he has a sister for that, and our play times with him can be more convenient, and not all day, every day. For example, we can let them play while we're making dinner.
I had been debating what to do for Krypto's 2nd birthday which is on Sunday. Last year we had a party with Pupcakes, safe doggie ice cream, and Ds brought a present. We had favors for Frankie and Thyri, and Frankie and Ds were here for a little while.
I could still bake Pupcakes for the 2 dogs, and I have a new ball plus one antler left that were for this exact occasion, but....his old ball is still holding up, and we gave them each an antler a week ago. And, the kids have been sick.
I told Dh that his present this year is a sister, lol! I may bake some dog treats, bones of some type, and leave it at that this year.
Oh, and remember that I said that Hira finally barked? Well, last night she was having her final constitutional of the day, and she barked in a short volley. She heard our closest neighbors' dogs barking, Dh said, and she used her Big Girl Bark. I didn't know that, at her smaller-than-Krypto-size, she could bark with so much power!
She does still need a bath, which her former-owner said that she won't allow. We will give her a bath, but let her continue settling in first, as it's only been 1 1/2 weeks so far. Meanwhile, we've been 'sponge bathing' her with wet-soapy cloths each day, which she seems to like, and it's helping a lot.
Well, this is a novel, but I wanted to give you an update.
