We all know how large an ostrich egg is. But, because the ostrich can be over 6' tall, the egg is 2% of it's body mass.
By contrast, it's cousin the kiwi, another flightless bird, is about the size of a chicken, but lays an egg which is around 25% of it's mass.
The reason is because a bird who would eat it's young, find the young too large after it spends around 80 days in the super large egg, growing slowly but constantly.
