I don't know if you've heard, but several police dogs have died of heat stroke this year.
They have A/C in the k-9 unit cars, and an alarm that sounds if the A/C fails. But, the alarm has been failing.
We're under an Excessive Heat Warning this weekend, and some of the things that they say for humans are:
Northwestern California is bracing itself for a scorching heat wave that is set to hit the region this weekend. As a high-pressure system builds toward the Pacific Northwest, temperatures are expected to soar, reaching near record-breaking levels in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Trinity, interior Mendocino, and Lake counties, as well as a Heat Advisory for northeastern Humboldt.
Residents are strongly advised to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety and well-being during this extreme heat event. The Excessive Heat Warning highlights the significant risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those engaged in outdoor activities or work. Authorities urge individuals to reduce, eliminate, or reschedule strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. It is crucial to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned environments, and regularly check on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and pets.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, as the interior temperature can quickly become life-threatening. Individuals who work or spend time outdoors should reschedule activities to early morning or evening hours, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is vital, as prompt medical attention is crucial in such cases. If someone is overcome by the heat, they should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and emergency services should be contacted immediately.
