It turns out that the rodent, for example, runs off before sucumbing to the rattlesnake's bite, and the snake can't easily track it. There are lots of rodent trails and scents.
But, they can track their own venom quite well. So by getting some on the outside of the rodent, the snake can track down his victim pretty easily.
I think that this is more newly discovered! As far as I know, it was not known when I was at the zoo. The herpetologist that I worked with part of the time, never mentioned it, nor was it in my bookwork/testing. Pretty interesting, I think!
