What is the most endangered sea mammal in the world? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I was sad to hear that the Vaquitas Porpoise is nearly extinct. They are the smallest species, just over 4', and are in Mexico. I knew that there weren't a lot of them in the 90's...going on 600...but hadn't heard that there are now 10 or less. It has a lot to do with commercial and illegal gillnets. The govt. lifted a ban on their no-tolerance zone in the Upper Gulf of California, the only place that they exist. They are trying various things to save them, such as buffer zones. Hopefully, something works. |
