I pondered as my toes dug into the warm sugary sand
A gray-blue sky hung over the shore as my time drifted.
I thought that God had made the deep blue sea
And curiously, while I thought, my heart mood lifted.
A driftwood stump outlined against the soft sound
With the cry of seagulls adding emphasis to the time
My thoughts turned to home where monoliths stand
And the shimmering heatwaves rippled upwards, sublime.
My nest is settled, cuddled in the edge of dancing evergreens
But memory takes me home again to the sandstone guard
Where the cold cuts through you, wintertime, and the heat
Burns the desert and those living there and makes life hard.
My young are gone; again I remember my life mate
Friends abound, my shelter is just as I've ever prayed.
Still burns a wish within my soul--a lonesome dream
Of a faraway place that holds my heart; I wish that I had stayed.
No complaints on life's tapestry; the threads are just so
The workings and wonders are dainty and bright
At this end of life, I've farther to go
And time will take me, on to the light.
