I served my time in the military
At times it seems so long ago
And yet it seems like yesterday
As I watch my son now proudly go
-
As I look upon our soldiers faces
Then gaze into their eyes
I wonder what they're thinking
And I pray their decisions are wise
-
They'll serve without question
Standing their ground where no man should be
Placing themselves in harms way
So that others might be free
-
Whether it's marching in a 130 degrees
Or walking point in the freezing rain
They'll ask for no special favors
You'll never hear them complain
-
They'll play down their own hardships
Claiming it's really no big thing
Yet many will be witness
To the horrors only a war can bring
-
Every soldier knows
Some will always lose their lives
Perhaps only God can say
What thoughts dwell behind a soldier's eyes
-
So why do some volunteer for another tour
When so many others in the world would run
They'll tell you without hesitation
Because their job is still not done
-
You see there's another side
It's the unseen force that often turns the tide
It's what renews a soldier's strength
And fills his heart with pride.
-
It's seeing children laugh and play
Watching an elderly couple walk arm and arm
Seeing people freely come and go
Knowing that each is safe from harm
-
It's knowing you made a difference
That no matter where orders might have you roam
You've made the world a little safer
Not only here but also at home
-
So the next time you see a soldier
Know without question or surprise
You'll find a quiet hero
When you gaze into their eyes.
