He's no bigger than a grapefruit
He'll never speak or walk
So from the dawn of time he's sat there
Just a lonely little rock
-
All through out the ages
He's watched the world around him change
Where once there lay an ocean
Now stands a mountain range
-
What was once a green valley
With life that flourished so grand
Now lays a vast and lonely desert
Upon dry and barren land
-
Destined to loneliness
He sets alone under a big and empty sky
Never getting a second glance
Even if someone else should happen by
-
Just a lonely little rock
Never knowing friendship or love
Finally his sadness grew so large
It touched the Great Spirit above
-
And it was at just that very moment
An Indian maiden stepped onto the desert floor
Lifting her eyes up to the heavens
She watched a circling eagle soar
-
Then in the stillness of the desert
The Great Spirit whispered in her ear
Saying make your path into the desert
Until a glint of light you see appear
-
The Great Spirit then guides his eagle
Passing his shadow over and over the rock
Using its glint of sunlight as a beacon
Showing the maiden just where to walk
-
Pausing for but a moment
In wonderment she slowly looked around
Seeing only the parched desert floor around her
Not another rock can be found
-
Kneeling down she gently smiles
Saying you look so lonely little rock
What stories you might tell me
If only you could talk
-
As she picks up the little rock
For the first time he feels the warmth of a friend
Then in the silence of the desert
They hear these words upon the wind
-
Every creation is my child
I've given life and spirit to each
Their every need and feeling
Is never beyond my reach
-
My wish for you my children
Is that you care and honor one another
Remembering that each of my creations
Is your sister or brother
-
As she carried the little rock home
He wondered what might lay in store
And was amazed at the world he saw
Having been no where else before
-
As they near the maiden's dwelling
The little rock is moved with great surprise
For encircling her home
She's placed rocks of different shapes and size
-
Never again to be alone
The little rock is in awe of such a sight
Many of the rocks she's painted
Letting them sparkle like stars upon the night
-
To honor her special little friend
She paints him with the colors of a new born rainbow
Then she places him in her yard
For all the world to know
-
She has set him right up front
Upon a bed of soft green grass
From there he'll catch the eye
Of any and all who pass
-
Many stop and admire
Saying, what a fine looking rock
While children love to touch him
Then giggle as they talk
-
The Great Spirit himself is pleased
As he looks down from above
For he knows within his heart
How much his little rock is loved
-
Surrounded by friends and loved ones
At long last a part of the flock
From that day and forever
He was a Happy Little Rock !!
