My son has a band and this happened!]
There was an old, OLD couple that danced a little bit to quite a few songs Saturday night... they'd dance for 30 or 40 seconds and then have to sit down, then they'd get up and do it some more. Well, when I went in to get the money yesterday, he was there with his wife again and came over and spoke to me and Carl and Shelia, and told us about how she has Alzheimer's and has been really not there for the last couple years... and how she came out of it with the music and remembered his name and asked him to dance with her, and told us how much it meant to him that we played those songs... I couldn't get it out of my head, so I wrote the following song this morning...
OUT OF THE MIST
SHE HEARD THE MUSIC AND REMEMBERED THE SONG
SHE HADN’T DONE THAT IN SO VERY DAMN LONG
HER HEAD CAME UP AND SHE BEGAN TO SMILE
SHE WAS THERE, REALLY THERE, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG, LONG WHILE
SHE LEAD HIM TO THE FLOOR BY GRABBING HOLD OF HIS WRIST
MAYBE NO JITTERBUG AND CERTAINLY NO TWIST
MORE LIKE A WALTZ, THOUGH THE BEAT DIDN’T FIT
AND HE CARED NOT A LITTLE, NOT ONE LITTLE BIT
HIS KNEES WEREN’T THE SAME, THEY DIDN’T MOVE LIKE THEY DID
WHEN THEY’D FALLEN IN LOVE, JUST A COUPLE OF KIDS
BUT THE SPARKLE AND SHINE, THE RECOGNITION IN HER EYES
FILLED UP HIS OWN, AND HE WANTED TO CRY
THEY WERE DROPS MADE OF SAD, NO USE TO DENY
FOR THE LOSS OF THE COMPANION, HE HADN’T SEEN THAT SHY SMILE
BUT THEY WERE MIXED WITH JOY BECAUSE SHE WAS REALLY THERE FOR AWHILE
THEY DANCED UNTIL HE THOUGHT HIS KNEES WOULD CRUMBLE TO DUST
UNTIL HE COULD STAND NO LONGER, ALL BONE SPURS AND RUST
BUT A VERY QUICK BREATHER AND BACK UP THEY WENT
IT HAD BEEN YEARS SINCE HE’D DANCED WITH HIS VERY BEST FRIEND
SHE CALLED HIM BY NAME, SHE SANG PARTS OF THE TUNE
ASKED “DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN”, AND HE THOUGHT HE WOULD SWOON
AND WHEN THE SONGS ENDED, HE WATCHED THE RETREAT
THE WAY HER FACE SEEMED TO MELT
BACK TO CONFUSION, DEFEAT
HE THOUGHT IT WAS OVER, THE MAGIC ALL GONE
AND AS HE HELPED HER UP TO GO OUT SHE WHISPERED…
