"Example"
Look at me son
This is what I'd like you to see.
Look at me; Oh look at me
This is what I want you to be.
Oh, mind of youth, that closes fast
The mind that cannot seem to grasp
those loving words spoken soft and near
Words which I couldn't seem to hear.
Youth soon grows through teenage years
Filled with long, love, and tears
When all of life presses oh so near
Yet still I couldn't seem to hear.
Look at me son, just look at me.
This is what I'd like you to see
Look at me--Oh look at me
This is what I want you to be.
Time passes at a rapid pace
And I lose sight of his smiling face
His love has never once grown dim
And this is how I remember him.
A man who did all he possibly could
To help someone else be something good
Never pausing or resting till his work was done
And still he found time to be with his son.
Look at me son, just look at me
This is what I'd like you to see
Look at me; Oh look at me
This is what I want you to be.
Through all my life he was at my side
And now he rests, my dad has died.
He left me without wealth or fame
But he left me more; He left his name.
And now at last, those words from him
which through the years remained so dim
Surged through my mind on that fateful day
Then I knew--Dad had shown the way.
Look at me, Son, just look at me
This is what I want you to see
Look at me; Oh look at me
This is what I want you to be.
And now I sit with my son on my knee
As he gazes thoughtfully up at me
I hope and pray that he might hear
These words which I whisper in his ear.
The words which I now speak to him
The words that through the years lay dim
Words spoken by a loving face
In a different time and a different place.
Look at me, Oh just look at me
This is what I want you to see.
Look at me, Oh just look at me
This is what I want you to be.
My son now is grown and gone his way
And as he lives from day to day
Within his mind those words though dim
Are quietly, lovingly guiding him.
Life is fast playing out it's role
And I have finally reached my goal
I life my head up toward the sky
And with all my love, I send out a cry.
Look at me Dad, just look at me.
This is what you wanted to see.
Look at me, Dad Oh, just look at me.
I'm the kind of man you wanted me to be.
