Well now I am going to have to go on the hunt to find out more about this. I am guessing they were close enough to earth that returning without running out of consumables was not a worry.
I was just watching an old interview of Shirra last night and he was asked about how quickly interest in the Apollo program by the public dropped off after 11. He said the drop off between 11 and 12 was significant and it only dropped worse. He said there was a slight increase for 14. He attributed that to Shepard being on it but I suspect it had more to do with how close 13 came to disaster. Either way, so sad to see how folks lost interest so fast because the space program infiltrated everything during the 60's.
