Back in 1978 we were on our way to Carson City to get married. We were traveling west on I-80. Back then the freeway had not been completed entirely. When it entered these small towns it would narrow down to just two lanes, and slow down to 30 miles per hour usually right on main street of the town. Then once you got through the town, it would widen back out to 4 lanes and divide and you were back to freeway speed.
Anyway, as we went through Winnemucca on this trip, the street went under a concrete train bridge. We remember so well a large banner that hung from the bridge. Winnemucca Overpass. Erected in 1939. After traveling 200 miles through nothing but dessert, that really stuck out. They were so proud of it. Reminds me of Mayberry and when they were blasting for there underpass and how Mayor Stoner felt it would really be a big boon for the town. My Wife and I still get a giggle out of that over 40 years later.
