I worked as an attendant all through my high school years. That was about the time the self service craze hit. I remember selling gas fos as cheap as 24 cents a gallon. Then the oil embargo hit and prices jumped to 35 cents a gallon. Boy, folks got really testy. As I mentioned earlier, My Dad was a maint. tech for a Phillips 66 dealer wo owned a couple of dozen stations. I remember him working on those old Tokheim dispensers. He would have that thing tore down completely, every part layed out on a clean cloth. I swear the thing looked like a grandfather clock. Gears, springs, levers, all kinds of stuff layed out. I have no idea how me managed to get it back together, but he did. |
