As I am sure you know, Grissom's Mercury flight went very well until splashdown. Then, for reasons still unknown, the hatch blew open allowing water to start filling the capsule. Grissom barely got out and then was struggling to stay above water because his suit was filling with water. A helicopter was trying to retrieve the capsule, but it grew heavier and heavier as it filled with water. They finally had to stop retrieval efforts because the helicopter engine was over heating. And the capsule sunk. They barely got Grissom out of the water in time.
Anyway, when he was named the first astronaut to fly a Gemini mission (After Alan Shepard had been grounded for medical reasons) he nick named his capsule Molly Brown (after the play The unsinkable Molly Brown) NASA big wigs did not find that funny and wanted him to change the name. So still angry (because he had been accused by some at NASA for blwing the hatch open, he insisted he never di so) told NASA he would comply. He would rename his capsule the Titanic. NASA decided that Molly Brown was okay after all.
I had never heard that story before about renaming it the Titanic. lol
Amazingly back in or around 2000 a crew located and retrieved the capsule.
