I read somewhere that the launch itself was so consuming for those involved, once the tower was cleared it was now for the folks in Houston to manage.

I was watching a documentary a while back and it mentioned on Apollo 17, the folks who had been in charge of the launch, were given pink slips minutes after the tower had been cleared. Kind of sad.
