The community's long-time barber, Hubert Davenport, is retiring after 63 years behind the chair. Had my final haircut yesterday. Mr. D has been cutting my hair since I was 12 years-old, over 50 years. His shop is so much like Floyd's in so many ways. Like many others, I often stop by for an hour or so just to hang out and loaf. A NC native, he's a huge fan of TAGS too and played tapes of the show in the shop on a vintage VHS player. In 2008, when I had the rug pulled out from under me at work, he didn't charge me until I got back on my feet 18 months later and wouldn't hear of me paying back what I owed. Sure am going to miss him.
