The situation with Armstrong was kept quiet for a number of years but it eventually went public.
Here is a snippit I got off of wikipedia describing what happened.
Death
Armstrong underwent heart bridging surgery on August 7, 2012, because an exercise test showed that his coronary artery was clogged. [74] Due to complications after this operation, he died on August 25, 2012 in a hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. [75][76][77]
On the occasion of Armstrong's death, President Obama had the flag hung at half-mast on all U.S. government buildings. Obama called Armstrong one of "the greatest American heroes, not only of his time, but of all times." [78]
On August 31, 2012, his family held a military honor memorial service in his hometown that was only open to invited guests. Among those present were Armstrong's former Apollo 11 crew members, Aldrin and Collins, and several other former astronauts, including John Glenn, Jim Lovell, William Anders and Eugene Cernan. [79][80]
On September 13, an ecumenical service was held in his honor at washington national cathedral where 21 astronauts were present. In this church, in one of the stained glass windows, there is a moonstone that was once donated by the crew of the Apollo 11. Among other things, the song "Fly me to the moon" was performed. One of the speakers was Eugene Cernan, the last man on the Moon. [81] Armstrong's body was cremated at his request and scattered across the Atlantic ocean from an American aircraft carrier on September 14. [82][83][84]
In July 2014, some of Armstrong's relatives agreed to a settlement with the hospital where he had last been treated for his heart. According to the complainants, medical errors had been made in the treatment that would have led to Armstrong's death. After heart surgery, Armstrong experienced bleeding in the vicinity of his heart after nurses removed wiring from him. Armstrong's two sons claimed that the hospital did not anticipate those bleedings correctly. The settlement amount was six million U.S. dollars. Most of it was transferred to Armstrong's two sons. One of Armstrong's brothers and sisters each received $250,000, and six grandchildren each received $24,000. As part of the settlement, the hospital did not have to plead guilty and the relatives promised not to make the settlement public. In July 2019, the issue came out into the open, when the New York Times newspaper published about it. [85]
