Dixie Belle Edwards was a friend of Mary Pleasance, the notary at the bank. Otis couldn't get the accident form Barney gave him when he fell at the jail notarized because the two ladies had gone to the Great Dismal Swamp to hunt black bear. This scene has a personal touch for me as the northern reaches of the Great Dismal Swamp are only about 15 miles from me.
