Each team gets 3 challenge fails on balls & strikes.
If you challenge & lise 3 challenges, you get no more in the game. But you could chalkenge 20. Go 18-2 & still be able to challenge strike/ball zone until you lose that 3rd challenge.
Reportedly its working extremely well with the challenge process lasting around 5 seconds.
Teams are happy with this system.
Frankly, I dont care which system is used, as long as they get the calls correct at a better rate & eliminate the appearance of favoritism & wild inconsistency.
It still doesnt resolve check swing issues.
Hopefully, the can actually define what is a swing. Is it the bat crossing the plate. If so any part of the plate or does it have to cross 20%? 50%? 90?.
Or...
Is it the batters wrist "breaking". Different umps appear to use differing standards.
I always felt bad for Miguel Sano. He never got the check call. But he has a very quick wrist break in his swing. He holds up often- in that the bat never crosses the plate- but his wrist breaks always.
The reality is. A player knows when he swings & when he holds up and at least 50% of the calls- the umpire disagrees with the batter. Hitters are at such a disadvantage. MLB, in wanting more excitement, more runners. Would be doing everybody a favor if they backed off a bit on calling 90% of borderline checks a strike.
Also- throw at a guys head. Purpose or accident. Batter takes 1st base. Hit a guy in the gead- he is never the same. What happens to the pitcher?
Pretty much nuthin.
There is plenty the homeplate umpire can work on behind the plate if the league were to adopt one of the new k'zone systems. It would make the game better. BY FAR! If/when umps are no longer a pitchers ir hitters umpire by reputation.
Hiw about they instead focus on gaining the reputation of calling every game the same.
All the sports have this issue. It's grown so tiresome!
Angel Hernandez is the posterboy of the # "why I think the fix is in" dot com.
Fix officiating & you remove the conspiracy that its all "fixed".
Who amongst us trusts that Ohtani wasnt complicit in the latest gambling Who-ha. I sure dont. Plausible deniability does not equal innocence.
Just too much bs surrounding the ifficiating of sports. Bad calls, makeup calls, missed calls, overzealous calls happen inside every game across every sport. The technology and the resources are available to eliminate 99% of it.
So far- all these leagues have basically put a drop or 2 in a giant bucket and proclaim- "were doing all we can"
HOGWASH!
When a league gets it fixed. When theyve done all they can. You'll know by one fact. We the fans will hardly notice the officiating crew.
I dont remember the last NFL, MLB, or NHL game I watched w/o groaning about a call or 12.
Truly. I cant recall it happening.
