After 5 years of a former spartan to now a WOLVERINE!
The michigan connection continues.
Now that ive slept on it. I awake pleased.
Not only the qb selected, but also the selection of the top lber in a really poor lber class.
Dallas Turner would have been a top prospect in any class. This year just didnt have as much high level. Latu, selected 1st. Has bigger medical red flags than Penix. Its a great story that latu overcame a broken neck, having spinal fusion surgery and expecting to hold up in the nfl is a tall task. I think everybody wishes that kid continued health & success. But thats some scary stuff.
Weve all been critical of kwesi's padt drafts. His "value chart" as well as his choice of trade partners. And we could split hairs that hes given up a lot. But- at the end of the day. The 2 choices gotta make any fan smile. Neither of these guys is jellen mond or lewis cine.
These are 2 flat out ballers. Football players not entertainment stars looking for paydays.
I will always get aboard drafting true competitive football players.
McCarthy after all is the lone qb from this draft that outplayed Mike Penix.
I looked up some info on JJ. Namely his 40 time.
He timed 4.51 at the combine. Then 4.47 at his proday. Of all these qb's this year. He also had exposure to 1 "skill" none of the others possess.
He ran play action from under center. The casual fan probably doesnt realize the importance of this. Its huge. A qb's mind gets wited a certain way via reps. If the 100's & 100's of reps- to date- dont include play action. And then you go to a team that is under center in its base offense. That young qb us going to struggle gaining that skill. The muscle memory of the footwork. The trust instead of fear in turning your back to the defense. It is a big deal.
I think? JJ is the lone qb of these six that did NOT take every snap of his college career in shotgun.
I had 2 concerns on McCarthy. His lesser experience. I think he had 26 starts as a wolverine. At least its not 5 starts like last years viking target Anthony Richardson.
The other concern is probably related to his inexperience. He stares down his primary receiver. Hopefully that can be trained out of him....
What we do know, JJ wanted to be a viking. The vikings made an effort in advance, to create a QB development system that was not in place for previous seasons, with the thought/ plan that the 2024 draft would bring the team a really good piece of qb clay. Perhaps BC of the plan to mold a young qb into KOC's vision- the youth of McCarthy was also an important aspect over taking 24 yr old Nix or 25 yr okd Penix.
Time will tell. But this fan feels good about allnof this. Its goid clay, and it appears to be a good development plan & staff are ready to accomplish the thing. The thing no prior viking regime has ever quite accomplished. Develop a rook qb into an NFL stud. Got close with Kramer & Daunte. But neither ever made it past really good to become "THE MAN".
A Final note.
I had touched on JJwr as the lockeroom leader. The whole highest paid thing etc...
If what im hearing is true. McCarthy isnt going to have any problems overcoming this via natural leadership personality... Itsa good fit. JJmac as viking qb. The intangibles are right. All thats left is him becoming the best nfl qb he can.
It wont happen quickly, hes not Caleb. But theres a very good chance JJ lives up to the billing- highest draft pick ever spent by Vikings on a qb.
Skol- JJJJJJJJ-
FLYING J is a regional gas station chain out west.
Viking offense nickname?
