"CANNOT relate to these younger guys"
That 1 sentence says so much.
Have any of you tried to talk to somebody under 30 yrs old? I'm sure it's not 100%, everything has its exceptions. Raised as a smart phone transportation device. Kinda like a carrier pigeon. The generation of this century is vapid beyond reason.
What was the sci-fi word for pre android robots. Automatons? Brainless mindless. Self absorbed in their social media bubbles & group think.
Lol, Thinking in that light. Thinking of zim trying to teach/ communicate with such a group has to boil his blood. Bobby Knight wouldn't toss chairs in front of these kids. He'd toss kids at the chairs.
In the past 10 years I've tried to hire kids for yardwork. One mowed all the spring bulb shoots along the border. Showed one how to lay brick & mortar. I'm going down the line, have about 6 or 7 bricks layed. He's going behind me removing & redoing what I just set. ATE- CARUMBA! I mean how stupid can you be! With both of these kids. Both were 15- 16 range. I turned to them & explain further- calmly. They just give a vapid stare. Blank feedback. I hired 2 14 year olds to stack firewood. Grampa had packed them a lunch. I explain where to stack the wood. They said they had stacked would before. I tell them $25 per cord for each. There's 3 cords of wood in a dump truck pile. 10 yards away is the wood shed. And the shed is down a slight slope, so it's actually easy hauling. The semi payed attention as I explained, as they were more interested in what grampa had packed for their lunch. ( 4 Gatorades, 4 lunchables a can of Pringles & a couple donette packs. I leave them to it. As I walk away. Before one log is lifted. They are each grabbing a Gatorade and a donut. It's 9am, grampa dropped them off 40 minutes late.
10 am I go outside the Gatorades are empty and between them they've moved maybe 1/4 cord of wood.
I asked them if everything was ok, if they needed anything. They told me they were "on it". So. I left them to it. Around 10:30, it got quiet outside. I peeked out the window. They were sitting with their lunch bags. I made a mental note & went about my biz inside. About 11:30 there was a soft knock on the door. I answered. It was the 2 boys. "We don't feel good, can you give us a ride to grampas shop". His shop is downhill from my house about 5 blocks away. I chuckled inside. But had already tried with this generations youth, so I wasn't surprised. I glanced out at the job site. Lunch trash scattered and still well over 2.5 cord at the woodpile. I smiled at them, asked, so you're done for the day? Are you coming back later or another day? They looked at e/o not quite a shrug. " No, it's too hard of work & it's too hot" it was about 75- 80°.
I asked what I owed them. " Well, we worked hard for as long as we could." My reply, " let's go look". Examination revealed barely anything more than the 3rd cord I had initially witnessed. I couldn't help it, I shook my head in dismay at how soft and unmotivated this pair of boys. I said, "that's not even a half cord you ve stacked" remember. I offered them, I thought generously. $25 per cord each. $150 to stack $450 worth of wood. I thought that more than fair.
But I felt guilty paying them each $10, which was about correct calculation. So I doubled it. Said how about $20 each after you pick up your lunch trash. They frowned but said Ok.
We then got in my truck & I drove them to Grampa.
The look on grampas face when we got there was one of shock. "What happened, everything ok". I walked over, shook Jim's hand & told him they were done. That they didn't feel good.
I just wanna remind all y'all. How hard we worked at 14 for a fiver. How quickly we'd get a woodpile stacked for a flat rate. 3 cords of wood? I can't imagine it taking more than 1.5- 2 hours by my self when I was 14. The only job I ever pulled such shenanigans, I think I was 16. My girlfriend's dad wanted his split rail fence & corral painted. 10 acres of fence!.
He offered me 2 bucks an hour in a California pasture one summer. I went & Checked the job. It hasn't been painted in 20 years. The paint he supplied was watered down white wash and the fence was inundated with black widow spiderwebs. I worked for about 4 hours and stopped. He owned a chain of welding shops in the Bay area. A rather wealthy dude.
That night when he got home. He had his daughter, my gf, call me. She said her dad Gunter said I did a shit job. All he had supplied was a wire brush. A 5 gallon bucket of white wash and a brush bigger than my hand. I told my GF Doris to tell him. The fence needed to be replaced or pressure washed before painting. That the white wash just dripped off the hard baked splintery split rails. That to wire brush that fence and paint it was an impossible task. I don't think he liked me much after that. The number of Black widows alone likely made that job go never completed the entire time I knew Doris. I don't know if Gunter ever tried to hire anyone else for the task.
There werent any spiders in my woodpile. I know, bc I wound up doing it myself.
You'd think, $1m contracts would motivate today's athletes to listen to the old geezers trying to learn'em up. Tbh, I don't think they care. Life is all pointless to them?
Beats me. My wife saw Mike McDaniels on TV. Dolphin hc. She likes Josh Allen so we watched TNF. She asked me, when McDaniels was shown on sidelines. "Who is that?... Is that their coach? I told her yes. She said, " He looks so small. He shows no emotion, he looks like a disinterested fan not a coach." Later, when the dolphins were crumbling. She said to me, " The dolphins aren't very good. I think it's because the coach is soft".
That is the fine line in today's sports, isn't it.
Hc has to be a marshmallow & somebody with some street cred needs to be team disciplinarian, and then hope the inmates don't go on a hunger strike.
For now, KOC & Flo got that schtick working. Who knows how long it lasts. Perhaps, they are just 1 "Royce Lewis" diva away from a 3 month collapse."
Enjoy it while it lasts. The Automatons will take it over soon. Lol
Jesus take me soon. We geezers can't take much more. Lol. 🙈
