Maybe it's deserved?
He didn't live up to the hype at USC.
AND - so far in Chicago. He looks like a rookie.
AND- it is Chicago. A worse QB graveyard cannot be found. Altho, the Jets, Panthers are recent contenders.
I bring this up bc. JJ McCarthy will very likely go through the exact struggles we see from Caleb, Nix, Daniels... The struggles we've witnessed years past from Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young. It just IS. QB is the most difficult position to conquer. Even with all the rule changes. The biggest leap in all of sports- is from lower league QB to pro league QB. AND, I still believe it is a mental/ emotional leap. As well, the leap in competition.
I think, many Viking fans are of the belief. Next year, McCarthy will hit the ground running after redshirting the entirety of 2024. It's unrealistic. CJ Stroud is the outlier. And JJ McCarthy hasn't in his career thrown anywhere near the amount of passes Stroud threw at Ohio St.
The Vikings have their answer at QB. Sam Darnold
Get him signed to a 2 or 3 year extension now!
Then, McCarthy can take the proven route. Learn behind a veteran. Even when healthy. Ease him in.
Then, in 2027? 2028? Trade Darnold for a kings ransom.
It is wisdom. I'm offering it at no cost. In 2028, McCarthy will still be younger than Darnold is now. And the expectation of being successful would be realistic. I would think, Sam I Am would sign a 3 year extension at $75m - $100m maybe sweeten it with some team success incentives ie- $50m bonus to win a Superbowl.
If they don't extend Sam now, while they can. A bidding war is likely to occur with the winner paying him more than I outlined above.
And the McCarthy era in Minnesota will begin in earnest. With far less chance at the success we are seeing from the veteran Darn-old.
Ps- Vikings opened as 1 pt home underdog vs Houston. I would think that number gets bet up. Closes as Houston being 2- 2.5 pt. favorite.
Homedogs bark loud!
