Im not posting to debate the hit.
Rather to weigh in on the conversation about qb slides, when its a late hit. The idea that qb's are gaming the rule, trying to draw the flag. How to fix it.
Its really simple actually, and the rule is already in the books. "Tripping".
If a defender makes a tackle by sliding in feet 1st to bring down the ball carrier. Its a tripping foul. Likewise, if a qb slides late into the legs of a defender. A tripping flag should be thrown. That penalty should be called, as it would be if any other player slid feet 1st, on purpose, into another player. It is illegal to do so because of the possibility of injury to the lower leg, ankle & feet of the tripped player.
I started noticing it last year. Qb's sliding late. Defenders going down awkwardly.
Call the rules evenly. On offensive players just as you would defensive players. The late slide/ late hit issue likely resolves itself.
Inform teams, tripping will be called on qb's if they slide late & take out the legs of a defender.
It seems a no brainer to me since the rule is already in the books. Its just never called. Perhaps the time has come to enforce it.
