1st-Each dog will need an up to date vaccination card. Depending on the local municipality. There may still be a required quarantine period. Your dog will be refused entry at customs without this information. I would make a copy of the documents. Use one of those adhesive document pouches that are attached to the packages you receive in the mail. Attach to the inside ceiling of each dogs carrier. Assuming the dogs fly in to where you are going-each dogs will need to be in individual hard side carriers. No pairing up pooches. Plan ahead with your vet- doggie downers are strongly advised for their flight journey. Dont overdose them. More is not better. But also- test each dog at home with a 1/2 dose. Then a few days later a full dose. Just to make sure theyre not allergic. Like humans. Allergic reaction to barbituates can be a psychotic episode and or negative physical reaction. Many years ago. Our akita nearly died from allergic reaction to pain meds. Its the only negative reaction my dogs ever had to medication. We got lucky. The vet administered the 1st dose in her office. 20 minutes later as we were nearly out of the parking lot. The dog had a seizure. Went into cardiac arrest. I made a quick you turn in the lot sped back to the front door of office. My wife ran in while i wrestled the 180lb limp noodle dog out if the backseat. By the time i was in the office waiting room, the vet was coming from the exam room. The dog was revived, lived another 7-8 years. You might be able to book passage on a ship? It used to be, cruise lines allowed dogs. Last I checked. Only true service dogs are allowed and thats only by some cruise lines and only specific sailings. But there are other vessels that take passengers. Of course- going to canada/ mexico you can drive them in. I have no clue the mexico requirements. Canadian entry only requires accurate & current vaccination records for rabies & parvo. We flew our cat in when we moved to alaska. I did not perform the test dosing of the cat at home prior to that flight. I couldnt say if that cat was allergic or not. But the cat went insane and never recovered. It was one of the worst pet experiences i ever had. What had been a friendly, cuddly childs lap cat. Was instead, from the moment we retrieved her from baggage claim, combative, mean and fearful of absolutely everything. People, noise, light. Let loose in our new home, the cat tore through the house. First hidding under a couch. Then under a very low china hutch. After 2 or 3 days. Somehow she found her way to a really narrow gap behind the kitchen caninets. In all 3 spots. She yowled endlessly. I finally got her out from behind the cabinets with a garden hose, flooding her out. We were able to corral her, with us receiving many scratches and a few bites. Put her in her per carrier and kept the carrier covered with a blanket. That cat never recovered. My youngest son, i think he was 4 at the time. Spent endless hours talking softly to the cat. He was able to have something of a relationship with the unfortunate critter. Feeding her. Letting her out to use litter box. But we "cat proofed" his bedroom, and he was very careful to keep his door shut when tending to the cats needs. The empathy that young boy displayed was rather remarkable. The rest of the family, me included that the best plan was to put the cat down. But my son promised to take care of the cat- to his credit he never shirked the duty. The cat lived another 8 ? Maybe 10 years. To be fair- the vet did warn us. Cats dont handle air travel well as a rule. Whereas dogs rarely have issues. Cats have a dual channel inner ear. Perhaps the rapid pressure changes wreak havoc on that area? Dogs, humans. Most mammals have single channel inner ear. I think its just feline species and Hyenna species with that dual channel thing. Lol- the stupid stuff i remember. Worthless info that remains in my brain. Meanwhile. The stuff i really wish i could remember. Recipes, Names, family events etc. Continue to grow fuzzier and foggier. ---+ --- As to my moving. I do have some offers on my house here. They came in at or above what I needed for my plan to work. The permit costs down on st johns are a problem. I had a hunch it was going to be costly. It was far worse than expected. I can still swing it. But im not sure its worth it. Between the move itself and coughing up a couple 100k in fees. Paired with the 50/50 proposition of me living long enough to reside in " the house that jack built". Im getting cold feet. In the meantime. A funny thing happened around here. The people are suddenly happier & friendlier. My nearest neighbor is no longer complaing at me for breathing his air. Hes no longer taking bb gun pot shots at my dogs. I did catch him on the game cam doing it. Called the sheriff. They had a conversation. It seems to have changed the dynamic. Its not that "Bob" is suddenly friendly. I doubt nice is in his DNA. But at least hes not in attack mode. For the moment anyway. From day 1. When i began thinking of moving. 1st it was down to Brookings Oregon. That was about 6 years ago. And then now. The Daunting part of it all. Its been the actual move. Physically doing the work. The packing. The weeding out- keep/ sell/ storage/ trash. Ive done it nearly every decade ive been alive. I know the process well. Its exhausting. The Trump election seems to have calmed the crazies quite a bit around here I dont know that i have seen 1 gun on a hip since before christmas. Wheras a year ago? Not a day went by- when in public- that i did NOT see at least 1. The true loonies- They got their wish. Maybe that was half the battle? Hell- maybe its 90%. Once they realize- for the poor & middle classes. The likliest result is that maga isnt their savior. Perhaps all the anger & itchy trigger fingers return. In the end. My final decision will rest upon quality of life. Most of my time here- away from home. Is spent on appointments- errands or walking my dogs. It would be the same wherever i reside. Can I do so here, now? W/o constant worry of confrontation. Is I remain- my disposable income affords me much leeway in lifestyle. If I leave- my lifestyle must be paired down significantly. We all pretty much want the same thing- or so I believe. To exist with liberty and without intimidation. All things being equal. Id rather finish out my original plan. To die on this mountainside in peace. Im leaning towards staying. We shall see how the locals manage their existence as the trump presidency moves forward. For the moment- the revolution is on hold. The militia is standing down. Ask me again in a month or 2 when prices havent returned to pre pandemic levels. Lol- the stupidity/ lack of understanding of it all is beyond the pale. |
