In the last election, the county sheriff dept proposed a $3m annual budget increase. Thats $200-$250 increase on every living resident in the county. For a family of 4. And extra $1k a year in just the county tax. It'd be collected as a property tax bond payment. Property taxes here had already nearly doubled post covid. For 4 patrol cars, 20 deputies and a jail? I can only imagine the ask on larger communities. On the flip side. You couldnt pay me enough to be a sheriffs deputy. I wouldnt do it for $100k a month! Maybe $200k if i am only required to park on the shoulder & eat donuts all day. lol.
As well, the sheriff vehicles arent gas misers.
The food at the jail house doesnt arrive via USAID. The health insurance premiums for the sheriff dept likely constitutes a "high risk" assessment.
