A man born in 1960. At birth, had a life expectancy of 66.4 yrs. Born in 1961, it jumps to 67.1. basically, an extra 6 months or so every year after up until the past decade or so. Life expectancies have begun to regress.
Also, if you go back to the early /mid 70's. Steroids made it into mainstream as ped for athletes. What began as a faster method of recovery from injury in the late 50's & 60's. Became a systematic approach to "bulking up". If you went to your local Dr. of high reputation. It wasn't brought up. If you did it was discouraged. But, I know in my High School team lockeroom. It was discussed and distributed, out of knowledge (wink nod) of the coaches. The coaches pressured us all to gain muscle. Some guys got huge fast, rumors were abundant. And you'd think, me the party animal would have no problem participating. Except. The rumors of sexual dysfunction that surrounded those fledgling rhoids- well. Thanks but no thanks.
Those early days of steroids? Idk, is it coincidence there was an uptick in liver, kidney issues. Testicular cancer amongst guys I had known in HS and were having health issues in their 30's & 40's?
I remember there was a near epidemic when I was in my 30's of athletes aquiring "enlarged heart". There was also much discussion that heavy roiders were becoming mentally unstable in there 30's. Aggressive personality disorder was a common diagnosis.
Where I live now. There is a very active black market ped network. And I gotta say. I've never seen so many " large" men per capita as there is here. Is that cause or effect of the very aggressive male behavior in north Idaho?
Idk. Like so many things, it's all connected, interwoven and likely impossible to prove.
Yet, steriod use amongst men in our age bracket down into the 20 year old range is amore common practice than most ppl realize. Is that a correlative component of the life expectancy of men declining while women's expectancy has stayed more constant?
Who knows. It could just be the decades of growth hormone used in the animal protein production industry... Or maybe it's too many Big Macs & Popeyes chicken baskets.
There are so many quack science diet plans that have risen & fallen over the years. The most accurate factual information mankind possesses on the influence diet and nutrition plays into longevity was completed a couple decades ago.
A 30 year study of 5 distinct regions in China. Each region with a greatly varied common diet specific to the region and separated by natural barriers such as mountain ranges and job centers.
The overwhelming factual evidence. The greater the % of calories consumed via mamalian protein. The shorter the life expectency & greater the occurrence of disease. The opposite was true when plant protein calorie intake % was highest. The greatest of all life expectancy was in the populations that consumed the most uncooked plant matter and ate little to zero animal protein. And if they did. It was small quantities of fish. Poached lightly or raw.
A final note. Around the same time, there was a survey of " octogenarians" those alive & healthy into their 80's & 90's. Nearly all had been thin or underweight their entire life. And the occurrence of obesity in the 100 yr old class was completely non existent.
It's exactly what Jack Lalane, back in the 50's, told us- sold to anyone that would listen. Vegan diet that emphasized raw greens & regular exercise are the keys to long health.
It should be taught to us in school when we are young. Habits formed young last a lifetime. Except, the USDA has been the center and science behind American nutritional guidance for all of our lives.
The USDA 1st formed back in the 18th century, as a private "consortium" of rich business entrepreneurs out in the western states. Originally, it was called- " The Western Cattleman's Association". It's sole purpose was to promote the consumption of animal products. From beef to lamb, chicken to pork. Eggs, cheese milk etc. their early financial success with their information campaign created one of the original national lobbying campaigns. They added in the corn, wheat & sugar interests and created the USDA as an initial influence campaign that later actually become a Government Agency. Kinda funny with all the medical science & health science govt agencies losing funding. The USDA remains the #1 source of dietary science distributed to American children... And it's proven to be half truths & or full on BS.
It is what it is.
The best gift you can give your loved ones is a copy of the fact based book. The absolute nutritional Bible.
" The China study"
Written in the era when science was based on fact. Not anecdotal half baked theory spread by social media influencers paid by the click.
It is what it is-
We are what we eat. We are what we learn.
A phrase coined by the 1st computer geeks back in the 50's....
Garbage in, Garbage out
In reality, Jack professed light daily exercise. Closer to yoga than body building.

Jack typically ate two meals a day: a late-morning breakfast and an early dinner. Each meal was simple but nutrient-dense, with a heavy focus on raw produce. Daily fresh juice with every meal. His no-frills diet helped him stay lean, strong, and energized well into his 90s. 96 at time of death from failed heart valve surgery.
Born in San Francisco of French immigrant parents, he spent his earliest years in poor health – addicted to sugar and junk food.
