I asked Hal to look into it.
Indeed- according to "Hal". Wentz focused his post surgery(October) recovery on total body conditioning and core strength improvement. The belief is this has greatly increased wentz mobility & flexibility.
The eye test suggests to me- wentz is in the best shape he's been since 2016/2017. After he lost his starting role via injury late in his rookie year. Wentz worked hard on bulking up his upper body to better withstand weekly physicality of the NFL.
If you look at photos of wentz on the field circa 2019 +. Dude look plump. Yet the high eagle draft pick looked a lot more like the guy we see on the field today vs giants.
It's intriguing to me.
Wentz went from stud to dud almost overnight. Was much of that due to his reimagined plump body? In 2015, playing for the vikings. His body looked more like 1974 Sonny Jurgensen. Understandable considering he was at home on his couch when the vikings called.
On the field today in New York? His body matches up closer to Sam Bradford circa 2017.
What does it all mean?
I'll be shocked if wentz is not named as primary backup/ #2 QB.... JJ as #3, Mad Max to the taxi squad. Especially after watching JJ today- continue to be the "holds the ball too long" QB in the room.
JJ has to get the ball out faster. Period.
I researched avg snap to throw time. (TTT is the abbreviation for the stat. Wentz 2.4- murray 2.7- JJ 3.1
Max slides in between wentz & murray.
Murray uses his mobility to scramble & buy time. For whatever reason. McCarthy doesn't utilize his mobility efficiently. Tends to freeze up inside the pocket rather than buy time via scramble.
I know we had all hoped. JJ-Mac would show growth this preseason. Especially in this exact area. Granted, It's a limited sample size. I personally don't see much if any improvement. The big negative hilight being the sack he takes right around 2 min warning of 1st half. That was a really ugly moment. Pure- deer freeze headlights stuff.
It's a dam shame. As hard as I've been on him. I'd hoped the time in the system and the reps in camp would result in us saying a maturing prospect today vs giants backups.... Nope. The tape never lies. Both Max & Mac look still- like rookie qb's selected as USDA. Problem being- max was a udfa. Mac was a top 10 pick.
*Sigh* Maybe? Sam Ponder & Christian can take JJ out dancing? Lean into disco/ techno strobe light clubs. Train the "deer" young QB to ignore the headlights? The time & added reps seem to have locked the kid QB into freeze frame.
