I guess the 3 wildcards per league addition provides late season drama- except? In the AL this year, all involved in wc #2 &3 are either barely at .500 or flailing below the break even mark.
Yes, its fun for september. But it also in really sketchy for team quality with a path to the ws. Stranger things have happened.... But what a disaster itd be for october competition if one of these warty AL pretenders wins a short series or 2 and lands in the world series.
I think- 1 wildcard is enough, and every playoff series should be 7 games with an exact same rest schedule in each series.
I would actually prefer, a version of the soccer relegation system. 16 first half teams play head to head final 60 games- 2- 8 team divisions seeded by 1st half records. The other 14 teams play a 50 game schedule- 2 - 5 games series amongst top 4 teams in relegation league. And a 7 game championship. With the winning team getting bumped up as a 4th team that joins the 3 wild cards in the top league. The wild card winner face the 2 division winners in the top league in the world series- 4 team tournament. The logistics and game #s to create the work through if logistics negotiable. I think? We'd get better baseball than this .500 approach. Better rivalries!
The best part of sports is the rivalries and even competition. Meaningful games early, mid & late season.
