According to 'A Basildon Chronology' on this site, the Jolly Friar was built in 1955, the second new pub in Basildon - the Crane was built the previous year.
We moved into Danbury Down in 1955 and within a year (I was 15) I was drinking at the Friar and the Railway in Pitsea.
I particularly liked the Mann's Cream Label Stout in the Friar.
