I just passed my 1st 30 days in Placencia on the southern Caribbean coast of Belize. It definitely takes a bit of adjustment, but for me it's well worth it. I'm about 40" from the water's edge and a 3 minute walk down the beach from Yolie's, one of my favorite watering holes. There are no chain stores or fast food here. All the meals here are awesome and reasonable. There are some nice resorts here if you need to be pampered- I'm not into that! There are tons of expats here and the Belizeans are very friendly.... and all speak English. If you'd like some perspective from someone who took the plunge, find me on FB and send a msg. I'm planning to be back in Houston for Xmas/New Years and BVT is on the agenda.
