FROM THE CHIEF GILLANE
We are aware the debris pick up has not been going as fast as we were told it would be. There have been problems with the land fill making the trucks have a 1 ½ hour turn around, also the weather played a part as every time lightening flashes they have to shut down for 30 minutes.
We have had a meeting with the debris pick up folks and they are doing their best to remedy the problem.
Crowder Gulf has assured me they will continue to be here and remove all debris until the entire city has been completed.
The second debris run will happen at least 1 week after the first run is complete in order to provide resident a chance to remove any debris not done the first time. I will provide the information on the second run when it is available.
I realize this is frustrating for you all as well as for myself and city staff. Please bear with me. As always please feel free to contact me directly on my cell 409-451-8945 with any questions or concerns. POSTED 07/18/2024
From Chief Gillane:
1. The Chief spoke to Crowder Gulf which is the company contracted with to remove our heavy trash and storm debris. They will have the trucks stop by city hall on Tuesday to register around 3:00 pm and will begin heavy trash pick up around 4:30 pm. They will have 2 trucks in operation; 1 will begin on Dolphin the other will begin on Blue Heron. The trucks will run through Wednesday. Heavy trash will be evaluated after Wednesday to determine if there is a need for additional pick up of storm and construction debris.
2. According to what the FEMA paperwork states, the trash cannot be in trash bags, cans or bins as they must be able to "see" what they are picking up.
3. If you have already bagged your sheetrock etc. and cannot dump it out, the regular trash people will pick it up at a later date, once all the household trash has been cleared from the neighborhood.
4. Regular trash is running today and has already been seen in the neighborhood. Use of additional trucks working has been requested.
5. It is recommended by Crowder Gulf that white goods, which includes refrigerators, freezers, a/c units, washers and dryers be allowed to be picked up by the scrappers so that there is less waste for the trucks/landfills and also to avoid them dealing with freon issues.
6. If any of the scrappers and junk collectors go beyond the line of your trash and enter your property without your permission please call 911. This is a service the city pays for and allows for a tracking of calls made for issues in the community. IF you call and a response to your property is not made within a timely manner, please call the City of Bayou Vista dispatch so that follow up can be made and inquiries can be directed to the county dispatch for failure to forward.
7. Regarding hazardous materials which includes solvents, paint, oil, etc., they will not be picked up by Crowder Gulf. While the Chief has reached out to Texas City to see if they will allow our citizens to bring to their facility for disposal he has not yet received approval. Liquids such as paint can be solidified by the addition of kitty litter to prevent seepage of the product into the landfills.
8. Access through the Sailfish gate will begin today with usual closing times being in place. Updated 07/15/2024
From Chief Jimmie Gillane REGARDING CONTRACTORS: Many of you will be enlisting the aid of contractors for your repairs. There are quite a few contractors driving through the city soliciting your business. The city has a list of approved contractors at city hall and they have been posted online at the city's website as well as on Facebook. Before you enter into a contract with anyone, please make sure they are registered with the city. The City of Bayou Vista is currently waiving fees to register so there is no excuse for anyone doing business in our community to not be registered. They will also need a permit in order to begin work in our community. They will need to come by the city office or contact our Building Inspector Kyle Engelhardt at 409.218.6043. If you should decide to use a contractor not currently on the city's list of approved contractors, and you enter into a contract where you give them money prior to beginning the work and there is an issue between you and the contractor, the city cannot intervene for you. It has then become a civil matter which will be your responsibility. All of this is to help protect you the homeowner from being a victim of a scam artist Again, if you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to Chief Jimmie Gillane or Building Inspector Kyle Engelhardt.
