Construction crews are working from 9 p.m. Friday, May 30, to 5 a.m. Monday to demolish the old southbound section of the FM 517 Overpass to make way for final construction of the new southbound main lanes.
Drivers can expect FM 517 to be closed in both directions at Interstate 45 during this time, the Texas Department of Transportation said. Additionally, there will be a single-lane closure on I-45 southbound between Deats and Hughes during the same time frame as part of the work. Off duty police will be on site to assist with the traffic control.
Drivers are urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes.
The detour for the total closure for the eastbound traffic of FM 517 is to turn right at the intersection of FM 517 and the southbound frontage road and continue south to Hughes Road and take a right to travel over the Hughes Road overpass. At the end of the bridge turn right to the northbound frontage road, turning right and taking the northbound frontage road back to the FM 517 intersection.
The detour for the total closure for the westbound traffic of FM 517 is to turn right at the intersection of FM 517 and the northbound frontage road of I-45 and continue north and then use the northbound/southbound U-turn at FM 646, continuing on the southbound Frontage Road to FM 517.
The $230 million I-45 expansion project between FM 517 to FM 1764 is expected to be completed in winter 2026, the Texas Department of Transportation said.
