For those of you who were unable to attend the City Council meeting last week. I would like to update you with a few of the takeaways from the meeting. As part of the Bayou Vista Emergency Preparedness Committee, I along with a group of citizens worked to create a simple two page document for the community. While I have thanked my group for their work, I would like to publicly recognize and give thanks to them for their hard work and dedication over the past 9 months to the creation of this document. The committee consisted of: Belinda Aaron, Leslie Burke, our newest council member Stanley Caplan, Claudia Hetzel Kaiser, Janet McKay, Chris Roper, and Glenda Nombrano Torres.
This document brings together critical information to assist you in not only preparing for a disaster, but also gives contact information for resources for dealing with the after effects of a disaster. While most of our community’s emphasis is on hurricane preparedness, and that was covered in the meeting, we do in fact have other disaster potential here with our proximity to Texas City’s plants and the railroad tracks.
The flyer is two sided and has a number of QR codes to assist with getting additional “live” information. On the front is the QR code and URL link for Savvy Citizen, the chosen notification system utilized by the city for notifications.
On the back are five more QR codes along with their respective URL links to assist with those not as comfortable with accessing information via a QR code. Feel free to download and save this information to your smart phone so that you will have it readily available and easy to find, when you need it.
#1 Galveston County Office of Emergency Management (GCOEM) has their county guide in a scroll format.
#2 GCOEM and has their guides in a magazine flip style format for those that prefer this delivery. ***Each of the GCOEM codes also has information for STEAR (State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry) as well as a children’s preparedness guides to make the preparation a little less scary and intimidating.
#3 FEMA allows you to sign up for real time weather alerts, emergency tips and after event information.
#4 Canal Owner’s Guide - written by resident Chris Roper to give valuable information regarding living on a canal and being prepared for how that life differs from a landlocked community. This document is also available on the city’s website.
#5 Bayou Vista Emergency Preparedness Guide with Siren Protocol - this updated guide has also been uploaded to the city’s website.
